Be Original Americas
Be Original Americas 282 179 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

There are many benefits of original designs. When it comes to lighting and metal work, Karice is committed 100% to creating original one of a kind designs.

Be Original Americas – What is it all about?

Since its founding in 2012, Be Original Americas has established itself as a leading proponent for original design. The nonprofit seeks to inform consumers, designers, and manufacturers on the value of ingenuity and authenticity.

Be Original Americas is a 501(c)6 non-profit committed to informing, educating and influencing manufacturers, design professionals and individuals on the economic, ethical, and environmental value of authentic design while preserving and investing in its future.

The value of authenticity cannot be underestimated or taken for granted in the marketplace. Through an extensive program of lectures, workshops and round tables, the campaign goal is to establish a set of industry standards that encourages consumers, the architecture/design community, producers, dealers and media partners to fully support creativity and authenticity in order to invest in the future of design, incentivize innovation and give back to the industry and the people it serves.

Be Original is committed to initiating a discussion on the importance of preserving original design through informational and educational initiative in various design contexts. A manifesto of nine basic beliefs serves as the guiding tenet of the initiative.

Nine points to Consider – This is What it Means to be a Member of “Be Original Americas.”

  • IN THE DESIGNER
    AND CREATORS

The designs and ideas of the designer are the property of the designer and the company they have partnered with in creating and manufacturing the work.

  • IN THE CUSTOMER

The customer will choose the originals when knowing and understanding the background of the designer, the quality, the manufacturing and the creative and commercial investment it takes to create something original.

  • THAT INVESTING IN
    ORIGINAL DESIGN IS
    GOOD BUSINESS

Investing in original design pays off. It keeps its value, is more durable and ages with beauty.

  • IN PROTECTING THE
    DESIGNER AND COMPANY

Young designers and ambitious design brands deserve design protection in order to keep designing new products and investing in bringing the design to the market.

  • IN CREATIVITY

It takes creativity to create something original and that inspiration from others and historic traditions is part of the inspiration to be creative and creating something new. We believe in creating NOT imitating.

  • THAT GOOD DESIGN
    MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Good design makes a difference in the world and in the way we live and work as it surrounds us in our public and private lives. Good design improves quality of life and therefore, needs to be encouraged.

  • IN THE FUTURE
    OF DESIGN

Design gives back to the industry as a whole and to the people it serves. By purchasing authentic design you are investing in the future of design.

  • IN AUTHENTICITY

The authentic way is the right way – for the customers, the designers, the public and the company that develops new authentic design through research, creativity, investments and skills.

  • IN TRUE PARTNERS

True partners also believe in this manifesto and all of the items above.

Portal Light A Design Collaboration

Collaborations vary enormously depending on their goals, settings, teams and resources. Yet all collaborations are a human activity, and the following six elements play an important role in all of them.

  1. Motivation
  2. Communication
  3. Diversity
  4. Sharing
  5. Support
  6. Problem Solving

When Karice was approached by Mark Kinsley of Lake + Wells, we were thrilled and excited to begin work on the Portal Lighting project.  Their request was for Karice to get help with the design engineering and prototyping of the new lighting concept.  The motivation for the project was the We Love Lamp that was a set for September 2018, as Portal was selected as a finalist in the 2018 competition.

Portal Lighting Concept for We Love Lamp 2018

Communication

Today’s technology with email and digital drawings,  the information about the Portal project was very clear.  The question was, how to bring the lighting concept to life.  This is where Karice, veteran lighting and product designer began the process of bring the Portal light project to life.

Design Process

Once presented with the design concept, the team at Karice went to working envisioning how the light could be built.  Numerous methods were analyzed, and much though went into designing the most cost efficient way to produce the light.  Brass with it’s popular appeal was the first choice of metal substrate for the project.  However, due to the expense of this material, and difficulty to process, it was decided to proceed with an aluminum substrate.  A solid billet aluminum T6061 material was selected for the Project.

The first process was to cut the profile to shape using our Omax 80160 water jet machining center.  Further processing involved the use of a CNC milling machining to refine the finishing details.  An anodized light gold finish was selected to mimic brass.  The Center panel of the light is genuine mirror polished brass for the reflectivity of a mirror.

Illumination Technology

Perfect for creating illumination even in the most diverse designs, LED technology was the only choice for this project.    The light gives  an indirect glow.  To avoid the appearance of bright hot spots, a frosted acrylic diffuser was selected  to hide the LEDs from view.

Tips from Canadian Lighting Manufacturers on Choosing the Right Office Lighting
Tips from Canadian Lighting Manufacturers on Choosing the Right Office Lighting 1024 683 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Lighting is a major component of any functional office space. A properly lit work environment offers up a host of benefits, from reducing eye strain and improving employee wellbeing to boosting productivity and lowering energy consumption. But with so many options to choose from, finding the best lighting solution for your office can be tricky. To help cut through the confusion, our Canadian lighting manufacturers have put together some handy tips on how to bring the best lighting into your workplace.

Ambient lighting

Ambient lighting is key for adding warmth and style to your office. Whether you have lamps, installed fixtures, or recessed lighting, you’ll want to make sure the light is just the right amount. Too much or too little light will not only cause headaches but also result in eye strain.

lighting design vancouver, lighting in vancouver, lighting vancouver, modern lightingTrack Lighting

Track lighting is booming in popularity these days—and for a host of illuminating reasons. Upping the design flair to offices everywhere, track lighting has a ton going for it. For instance, they come in a wide range of styles, provide versatility in use, work as task lighting, save space, and are easy to install and configure.

Lamps

Perfect for creating an inclusive work environment, lamps provide an intimate gathering place for meetings or social opportunities. If you are looking for a way to boost concentration and team build, lamps make great, warm-glow lighting options for your workspace.

Task lighting

Overhead fluorescent lighting can cause a wide range of health issues, from hyperactivity to sleeping problems. Task lighting, however, shines directed light on your work, keeping the glare away from your eyes. To ensure your employees are happy and healthy, switch to task lighting with low-glare bulbs.

Dimmable lighting

Going with dimmable lighting allows you to control how little or how much light you need at any given time. Regulating the amount of light will also translate into lower energy consumption—and that’s good news for your operating expenses and your wallet. For more savings, consider installing timers or sensors in your workplace.

Consult with professional lighting manufacturers

Whatever project you’ve got on the go, if you want to make the most of your office lighting, consult with the experts. Quality Canadian lighting manufacturers will design and produce beautiful custom pieces to meet all your workplace lighting needs.

Proper lighting is crucial for any office. Making the right choices and having a clear plan in place will help you create the ideal lighting solution for you, your staff, and your clients.

Lighting Installed – Customized for this Home

Working directly with the builder with V Plus Illumination Design, it was decided to install three fixtures from Karice’s comprehensive lighting collection.  As fitting for this custom luxury home, the fixtures were customized specifically for this master piece home.

Entrance – Linked Luxennea with unique details

Our Linked Luxennea Chandelier was chosen for the front entrance.  Custom details were a must for the location.  The size of the light was modified to fit the space.  Typically sold as linked 5ft diameter luxennea lights, for this project, the size was changed to two 4ft diameter luxennea lights.  The direction of the lighting was also customized.  The lighting direction here is pointing down versus pointing in.  A custom gun metal color was selected to finish both the entrance and living room lighting pieces.  For the Living Room, a custom sized Diamond Luxennea Series 2 LED light was chosen.

Cascading Chandelier over three floors

A unique custom 15 light installation using our Electron Pendants was created in the staircase.  V Plus Illumination decided on how the fifteen lights would be suspended to create the best display of lights for the location.  The end result is spectacular.

Karice is happy to create custom pieces to fit your interior decor.

Sneak Peak to Da Vinci
Da Vinci Collection – Inspired by the Renaissance Man
Da Vinci Collection – Inspired by the Renaissance Man 900 549 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Da Vinci Collection – Inspired by the Renaissance Man.

Da Vinci Collection – Inspired by the Renaissance Man.

The Da Vinci Collection is inspired by one question: if Leonardo, the great Renaissancian, were alive today, how would he incorporate 21st Century technology into his designs?  Over the last ten months, this has been Karice’s inspiration and guide in creating this handcrafted luminaire series.

Luxury Home and Design Show – 2018

At the 2018 Luxury Home & Design Show, the Italian Renaissance is re-envisioned,  and when it came time to look for our inspiration, the choice was simple – Leonardo Da Vinci.  For Maurice Dery, co-founder and lead designer at Karice Lighting, the mission quickly became clear: to make use of mechanisms produced by Da Vinci to play with light, to make light move many different directions.  The team at Karice has created especially for the show a fixture that uses a pulley, combined with mirrors and magnifying glass, to create a dynamic play of light.

Booth Display – Partner with Kalu Interiors

Karice has worked with KALUInteriors to create this space, reminiscent of Da Vinci’s study.  It combines old and new elements.  For example, its brass components have an Old World feel, but, innovation is represented in new materials, such as the Mirror Flex Wall Coverings provided by ODYSSEY Wallcoverings.  The central chandelier, created by Karice, is the primary light source; using magnifiers, it bounces light throughout the space to compliment the reflective gold wall coverings, the extravagant porcelain slabs provided by LAMINAM Stone Tile, and the beautiful authentic antiques provided by SCOTT LANDON ANTIQUES.

We are so thankful to our Sponsors

We would not be able to do this display without the help of our many LHDS sponsors.  Special thanks to Kalu Interiors, Best Builders Ltd., Diffusion Lighting, Laminam Stone Tile, Mirian Aroeste, Odyssey Wallcoverings, Project X and Tall Tree Construction.

SLS Lighting Art & Science – Seminar and Exposition June 12 2018 at Parq Vancouver, and June 14, 2018 at Hotel Grand Pacific in Victoria, BC.

Lighting, Art + Science will be held on June 12 + June 14, 2018 at the Parq Vancouver + Hotel Grand Pacific respectively

Seminar A: Light and Shadow. Sustainable Lighting for Urban Landscapes

This seminar will highlight how “Energy”, presented here as -shadows and light – played a key role during ancestral societies, in our present day, and will keep doing so in the future. Elias will talk about creating a Space within a Space, using light. Our privacy, the connectivity, speed of mobility and handling the big data are some of the issues that are being analyzed in order to achieve a human centric lighting design for urban and public spaces.

Seminar B: Making an Emotional Connection with Lighting

Light is used in a variety of applications and the important subject is PEOPLE. Colour preference is about people and applications. Discover how lighting design and light contributes to enhancing experiences. The effects of light sources on and below the black body locus will be discussed and how it affects perception and enhances colour appearance in a variety of applications. Explore how you want people to feel comfortable, attractive, confident, and good about themselves. An in-depth study on the cosmetic industry will also be explored.

Seminar C: The Science and Application of Circadian Lighting

With growing emphasis on healthy built environments, circadian lighting is a popular topic that many designers and end-users are being asked to explore. This lecture will outline the science behind circadian lighting, telling an easy-to-understand story that helps explain what we should expect from circadian lighting, as well as address important design considerations, who should expect to benefit from circadian lighting and what those benefits are.

Seminar D: The art + science of visual communcaiton

When one hears the term ‘digital signage,’ the first thing that comes to mind is the technology – or, more specifically, the hardware behind such mainstream applications as menu boards and video walls. Technology, however, is just the means to an experience, not an experience. In this seminar, we will discuss how to create out of the box experiences and to look ahead at technology as a way to tell your clients story.

Unique Lighting Design
Unique Lighting Design for JJ Bean Cafe – UBC Campus
Unique Lighting Design for JJ Bean Cafe – UBC Campus 1024 768 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Karice is always thrilled to be able to work on projects requiring Unique Lighting Design.  From concept to reality this is what we do every day.  Fueled by passion to create unique lighting designs our team can’t wait to get started on the next project. LED illumination has opened up the door to lighting design, it is the way of the future.

Unique Lighting Design created for the new JJ Bean Cafe – Iconic plus two elements of discovery.

In  January 2017, Karice was approached by Dialog Design to help them with the lighting design for the new proposed JJ Bean cafe on the UBC campus, set to open in the summer of 2017.  We were presented with a challenge to design a lighting installation for the new cafe that would create an element of discovery.  They needed the light to be unique to the space and  iconic

Our team went to work.  We love the idea of simplistic architectural lighting and random architectonic shapes.  Using LED lighting channels, we created a lighting concept  that changes depending on the viewing angle.  We were able to create a piece that was not only iconic, but included not one, but TWO elements of discovery.

These “elements of discovery” have to be seen to be believed.  Viewing the installation from below on the ground floor reveals “U-B-C” while observing the same installation straight-on from the second-floor spells “J-J-B” (initials of the cafe).

This iconic piece was custom developed for the UBC location, which opened in September of 2017.

The cafe at UBC is the first of the chain to open on a University campus.  The size and shape of the building is long  and narrow, with plenty of nooks requiring creative lighting solutions.

Undaunted by the challenging architecture, the lighting designers on this project designed the concept in January 2017.  It was approved in April and the team built the custom piece, as well as other custom lighting in this location, in May and June of 2017.

So unique, visiting the cafe on the UBC campus to view the lighting alone is a worthy endeavor.

JJ BEAN UBC – Element of Discovery #1

Dimensions, materials used to create this Masterpiece

This lighting feature in the Cafe at the UBC campus in Vancouver, BC consists of nine linear LED lighting fixtures.  These fixtures are individual shapes that make up the random shape of the lighting installation featured here.  The random placement of the nine linear lights is intentional.  From every viewing angle the installation appears random.  However, when viewed in specific locations, the elements of discovery in this unique lighting installation miraculously appear.

The lights are arranged in three sections.  Section 1 is “U”, section 2 is “B” and section 3 is “C”.  The linear shapes are cut and welded using a custom proprietary 3″ x 3″ aluminum extrusion.  The overall size of this installation is approximately 13 ft W x 6 ft D x 5 ft H.  A frosted clear cast acrylic diffuser eliminates the hot spots, but offers the maximum illumination and lumen output.

Suspended by aircraft cables, the lights appear to float, creating this unique, intriguing lighting installation on the UBC Campus.

Karice is able to design the perfect light for your space.  You are only limited by your imagination and budget.

Karice has been a custom lighting and metal work manufacturer for over 30 years and are an award winning industry leader. Custom Linear Lights – Tractor Foods Custom lighting design for their West Broadway location in Vancouver, BC.  – Dave Wong of WHG and Karice Enterprises collaborate a third time to provide custom lighting for Tractor Foods at their newest location on West Broadway.

Custom Linear Lights created for Tractor Foods on West Broadway

In the winter of 2017 Dave Wong came to Karice with the lighting concept for the Tractor West Broadway location.  Dave liked our new RETTA linear light, but wanted something with an even simpler design.

Using the same basic idea and technology developed in our Retta light, a newly designed minimal end cap was used for the lighting installation at Tractor’s new location set to open in 2018.   The installation  was crafted by Karice using our in-house, proprietary aluminum lighting extrusion.    Once again we used extra bright LEDs, which provide lighting that would illuminate the entire restaurant.

Eight new linear lights are Suspended on the Ceiling

Eight new linear lights were made for the restaurant location.  When it came to suspending the light in the restaurant, Dave wanted a minimalist approach.  Using a custom Z bracket attachment and ceiling canopy, the suspension methods were mounted directly to the concrete ceiling.  The light was suspended by aircraft cable, with differing heights to have the lights suspended at varying angles.

RETTA inspired by Nature is what you will receive with this new lighting design.  We offer lighting for today’s modern world.  Simplicity and clean lines for today.

RETTA Inspired by Nature

Retta inspired by Nature.

Meet Retta.  Inspired by nature’s log jam on the shores of BC’s beautiful Harrison Lake, Retta takes her name from the Italian word for “straight line”.  Retta’s meticulously machined end caps with light gold anodized finish resembling brass, decorate the ends of this trendy design.  The grooves in the end caps create visual interest with three smooth surfaces.

Interior designers are seeking elegant, sophisticated, slim-lined lighting fixtures that won’t impede the view of the clients.  With Retta we have a classy, sleek fixture set to highlight any residential, corporate, or hospitality design.  The Retta lighting line is a fresh remake of the minimalistic linear light.

Retta’s slim shape allows for variety in its installation – suspended, surface mounted or recessed.

Lighting on Display at the Volvo Booth at IDS Vancouver, BC

Seventeen Retta lights were used in a car display at IDS Vancouver 2017.  Arranged in a curved fashion along the custom canopy, the lights mimic the car tracks of the vehicle.  The 6ft x 18ft canopy, also designed by Karice, served up an additional branding opportunity for the car manufacturer.

Sure to be stylish in any setting, the light body is a blackened bronze anodized finish and frosted clear acrylic diffusers – a perfect match with the end caps.  Retta is available in 18″, 24″, 36″ and 48″ lengths.  Custom installations can be made up to 20ft long.  The light source is an integral LED strip available in 2700K, 3000K and 4100K.

Electron  is announced as a winner of the 2017 LIT Design Awards Competition in Los Angeles.

Electron Pendant Wins at 2017 LIT Design Awards Competition

Electron Pendant wins at 2017 LIT Design Awards Competition. It has won in the Pendant and Designer Lighting Categories.

In physics, the electron is a subatomic particle with a negative elementary, electric charge.  Electrons radiate energy in the form of photons when accelerated.   Thus, begins the inspiration for the light that we have designed and titled “The Electron”. The Electron is simple and refined, yet modern and futuristic.

The Electron pendant is part of a lighting series that has been in development since December 2015.  The series now includes a wall sconce and pendant (2016 release).

The Electron reflects efficient engineering, without compromising beauty or functionality. It is illuminated with energy efficient LEDs and diffused by the frosted clear acrylic along the inner and outer rings. The double-sided lighting maximizes illumination, while the LED maximizes efficiency. Aside from its beauty, the frosted acrylic also serves as a diffuser to eliminate hot spots.

Like the subatomic particle, the light is deceptively simple. But as you delve deeper, its ingenuity is revealed. On the front surface, there are no visible fasteners on either side of the rings, which allows for a clean and refined finish.   The light is suspended from co-axial cable which offers a clean suspended appearance.  The light appears to be floating in mid-air.

LIT Tokyo Exhibition – May 12th – 16th 2018

Karice’s Electron Pendant has been chosen by LIT Design Awards to be included in the Tokyo LIT Exhibition, among 30 projects selected from the 2017 LIT Winners.  The exhibition will occur at the Space Market venue in Tokyo, Japan on May 12th to 16th 2018.

Harvest Haus displays Karice Hollow Tree, Vancouver’s largest Volkfest

From October 5 through 14, 2017, Karice’s hollow tree was on prominent display at Vancouver’s largest Volkfest, Harvest Haus.  A replica of Stanley Park’s famous 700-year-old tree, this installation was perfect for the first-century folklore celebration.

The result of a collaboration between Maurice L. Dery and Stepan Vanicek, this unique masterpiece is made from literally thousands of lineal feet of weld.  Flat strips of aluminum were cut on our OMAX waterjet machining center and then bent and tacked together in ways that seemed impossible.

Measuring 8 feet by 12 feet and 16 feet high (not including the tree branches), the hollow tree took months to build and at times Maurice wondered if he was asking too much of the aluminum.  “Metal just isn’t supposed to do this!” he would say.  In the end, each mating strip matched perfectly and the fabricated creation was identical to the 3D model.

IDS Vancouver is the first event to display our tree

First exhibited at the IDS Vancouver 2016 show, the hollow tree consists of two halves so it can be transported.  In order to install and assemble the tree we had to design and fabricate a separate aluminum tubular substructure.  It attaches to the tree with wheels, is hinged at the top – equipped with cables and a winch – and brings the two halves of the tree together. Watch this VIDEO HERE to see the stunning installation in action.

Exhibited outdoors in the evening at Harvest Haus, we made a roof for the hollow tree to make it waterproof and suspended three Retta lights inside for illumination. It was staged as a bar for the event and the hollow tree display added delight and intrigue to the massive Halle.

Beer is a central focus of Harvest Haus and this year’s festival featured 23 varieties including German, European, and local craft beer. There were also selections of cider, wine, and spirits.

And what would Harvest Haus be without authentic Bavarian food vendors? The two-week festival opened in Bavarian style, honouring the traditions of the Harvest and combined authentic European traditions with modern fare. The festival offered seven sittings—everything from The Stein Games (beer sports competition including Stein Pong) and Lippensynchron Battle (singing competition) to The Duelling Arts (swordplay and competitive axe throwing) and Zany Mode (costume party).

Although there’s no formal dress code, festival attendees were encouraged to don lederhosen or dirndl and drink out of steins.  Thank you to Harvest Haus and The Social Concierge for displaying our hollow tree. We sure had fun at your event!

Lighting Designers Create a brand new lighting design for the Karice Lighting Line – Introducing our Ennea Wall Sconce and Ennea Pendant.

“Lighting Designers Create” – Maurice L. Dery and Jordan N. Dery collaborate to create our Ennea Lighting series.  New lights created as the Love Child of our Diamond Luxennea and Electron Wall Sconce.

In the fall of 2016, our client from New Market Ontario came to Karice wanting wall sconces to match his newly installed Diamond Luxennea in his foyer.

The lighting designers of Team Karice immediately went to work to design a new lighting fixture.  Using Auto-CAD inventor, 3-D conceptual images were created and presented to the client.  The client loved what he saw, and made a suggestion as to how he would like to see the design changed.  The chamfered edged on the Electron a minimal.  The chamfered edge on the Ennea was made to be the full 1/4″ thickness of the aluminum plate used in the light.  We loved how this created an even greater angular look to the light.

Ennea Wall Scone

Ennea Wall Sconce

The Diamond Luxennea chandelier that was made for our client in New Market used LEDs with a cool lighting temperature.  To develop the Ennea Wall sconce using matching color temperature, research had to be done to obtain a product that would work.  The first LEDs we purchased were scrapped as they created Hot Spots.  Finally, we were able to source a suitable LED that would work for our client.   This of course gave Karice additional flexibility to offer its clients in the future.  The Ennea lighting products are available in both warm and cool color temperatures.

The lighting designers at Karice also took the time to design and develop a Pendant model in the Ennea Series.  Pictured below is a look at the Ennea Tri-Pendant.

The Story behind the SHROOM light

Kalu Interiors approached Karice in April 2016 to help them with their IDS Vancouver Central Bar display. They needed lighting for their display, and came to Karice to design and supply the custom lighting. The theme planned was Alice in Wonderland. We were given the project carte blanche, so this is when the real fun began. Lead designer at Karice, began contemplating the story of Alice, and one night while sitting in the bathtub, design innovations began to populate the mind of our master designer, Maurice L. Dery. The idea of huge mushrooms began to take hold. And so began the journey to create ‘Shroom.

Shroom is an interesting take on a Pendant lighting fixture. Using thin gauge aluminum shapes, the mushroom gills, thirty in all, form the unique shape of our light. Shroom is an LED pendant light fixture that illuminates from both its inner core and a down light. The illumination from within casts a unique play of light onto the aluminum gills. A beautiful array of colors results from the glow of its inner core. The light is also equipped with an MR11 down light. This enables the light to be used for task lighting.

A mushroom shape is not your typical lighting fixture. Travelling on a whimsical theme, the gills of a mushroom heavily influenced our design. Our design began by using Auto-CAD inventor to create the light fixture shape, using the constraints of a 50.8 mm diameter center core. Once the shape was finalized, more detailed drawings were drafted. The aluminum gill shapes were cut on a water jet machining center using thin gauge aluminum sheet material. The details of the top and bottom caps were drafted in Auto-CAD mechanical. CNC programs were written to produce the machining of the top and bottom caps. The caps were designed to enable mounting of the LED’s, the center lighting diffuser, and hold all 30 aluminum gills. Once all of the components were made, the parts were sent out for anodizing. The lights that exhibited at IDS Vancouver in September 2016, were finished in a light gold anodized finish. This color resembles the currently popular brass, only at a more affordable price point.

The light is 596.9 mm diameter and 406.4 mm high. The light is constructed using aluminum, acrylic and energy efficient LED’s. The light is suspended using aircraft cable. A coaxial wire is used for power, thus giving the illusion that the light is floating in mid air.

Tractor Foods Custom Lighting- New Location at the Telus Gardens on Robson Street in Vancouver, BC 1024 684 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Tractor Foods Custom lighting design for their Telus Gardens Restaurant – Dave Wong of WHG and Karice Enterprises collaborate a second time to provide custom lighting for Tractor Foods at their newest location on Robson Street.

Tractor Foods Custom and Innovative Lighting Design for Telus Gardens location

In the spring of 2016 Dave Wong came to Karice with the lighting concept for the Telus Gardens location.

In May 2016, we were presented with initial design concepts for the new location.  The new lighting installation was set over the dining area of the restaurant.  The design consists of intersecting linear lights.  A design theme that was carried through out the rest of the restaurant.  Similar subtle details were replicated in the millwork, unifying the design.  The installation  was crafted by Karice using our in-house, proprietary aluminum lighting extrusion.  Welding the channels together, the lighting installation is 22-feet x 10-feet in size.    Using extra bright LEDs, we were able to provide lighting that would illuminate the entire restaurant.

Suspended Lighting Design for Tractor Foods

When it came to suspending the light in the restaurant, Dave wanted a minimalist approach.  Originally, we had imagined 10 – 11 rigid drop tubes to suspend the light.  Dave wanted only six!   This would mean that the light would cantilever and project out from the drop tubes.  The difficult part of this installation was to figure out, where the six drop tubes would work.  The balance point on the structure had to be figured out, and finalize the locations.  Using large round tubing and large, thick mounting flanges, we were able to meet the strict requirements of Vancouver’s seismic zone codes.

Custom lighting installation for Caffe Artigiano
CAFFE ARTIGIANO – Park Royal, West Vancouver, BC
CAFFE ARTIGIANO – Park Royal, West Vancouver, BC 1024 768 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

New Custom lighting installation –  Box Interiors designed a beautiful custom lighting installation for the newly renovated Caffe Artigiano in Park Royal in West Vancouver.  An eight foot diameter lighting ring was the design concept brought to Karice by Box Interior Design.  The end result is spectacular a total eye catching feature to the cafe.  Our Caffe Artigiano project page shows more pictures of this custom lighting installation made for this location.

CUSTOM LIGHTING for Caffe Artigiano in Park Royal – Karice and Box Interior Design collaborate.

Tricia Link of Box Interior Design in Vancouver collaborated with Karice when bringing their lighting design to life for the newly renovated Caffe Artigiano in Park Royal.  The lighting concepts were drawn up by Tricia, and Karice went to work to see how to make the design work.  The concept included an 8ft diameter lighting ring that would suspend nine Rejuvenation Cedar & Moss 14″ pendants.  Faced with the challenge of enabling the lights to be re-lamped was one obstacle that had to be overcome.  Maurice came up with the idea of individual clamping brackets that held the pendant wires into place.  This eliminated the need to store excess wire in the ring that would be needed facilitate the re-lamping process.   Our next challenge was a bigger one.  We had completed our shop drawings, and asked the question, “will the eight foot ring fit through the door?”  Unfortunately the cafe was equipped with only a single door.  This obstacle would make it impossible to fit an eight foot diameter ring through the door.  Back to the drawing board, Karice redesigned the light so that it would come apart in three pieces. Once shop drawings were approved Karice went to work to build the ring.

AutoCAD was used to draft up the shop drawings for this lighting installation.  Pieces were cut on our Omax Water Jet Machining Center.   Using solid sheet aluminum the light was crafted with three layers and three sections.  Each section joins together using overlapping joints and fasteners.  A unique canopy was also built for the project.  A unique clamping mechanism was built into the canopy that would clamp all nine pendant wires to keep them taut once the light was hanging.  This is another service the team a Karice offers.  Always trying to think all possible outcomes that will occur from an installation such as this.

Once the lighting ring was completed a pre-assembly was completed on our mezzanine.  This is one step that we always complete.  Pre-assembly assures that our product will fit in its final home.

Box Interior Design has also posted photos of this project on their website and can be viewed HERE.

Romer's Custom Lighting
ROMER’S BURGER BAR – Port Moody
ROMER’S BURGER BAR – Port Moody 1024 683 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

New Vintage Custom LED lighting design –  Vintage and modern team up to create the new lighting installation at the Romer’s Burger Bar in Port Moody.  Four brand new lighting concepts were brought to life by the team at Karice.  The end result was stunning, adding to the warmth and glow of this new dining location on Morrissey road.  Our ROMERS project page shows more pictures of these custom lights made for this location.

CUSTOM LIGHTING for Romer’s Burger Bar in Port Moody – Karice and CLO Design collaborate.

Robert Clark of CLO Design in Seattle contacted Karice when trying to source lighting for the new ROMERS Burger Bar in Port Moody.  The lighting concepts were drawn up by Robert, and Karice immediately fell in love.  Karice has been working with CLO Design for years, and has always loved what they come up with.  They are innovators in their own right.  To work on this new restaurant location was exciting, and we couldn’t wait to get started.

The look and feel of the restaurant has a vintage appeal.  We loved it.  As you enter into the front door one is greeted by two large starburst style chandeliers.  Each light is equipped with vintage edison style LED bulbs.  The lights are huge at a 5ft diameter globe shape.

In the dining area two large 5ft diameter chandeliers were made.  Each light has (x24) candelabra bulbs.  Feit Electric’s new edison LED Bulbs were perfect for the light.  Feit has done an amazing job on reproducing the warm glow of the incandescent bulbs.

The six booth tables have a steel pendant light that hangs over each location.  The steel shades were made with thin gauge mild steel, and were left with a natural steel finish.  Each shade was coated with a clear epoxy finish to preserve the look.  Each steel pendant is illuminated with a single edison LED bulb.

Upstairs in the Growler room is an inviting space for sitting at the bar.  Three large rings and custom 8-lamp chandeliers were meticulously installed on the ceiling on the mezzanine level.

New lighting design for Tractor Foods – Dave Wong of WHG Design and Karice Enterprises collaborate to provide custom lighting for Tractor Foods.

WHG Design and Karice Enterprises – Work Together for a Design Collaboration to provide a new and Innovative Lighting Design for the newest Tractor Foods location on Quebec Street.

In late 2015 Dave Wong of WHG Design and Steve and Meghan Clark, owners of Tractor Foods came to the Karice facility to investigate lighting for their new  location set to open in early 2016.  Karice was able to show everyone, the seamless process that Karice provides to their customers to accomplish the task of a new custom lighting installation.

In January 2016, we were presented with initial design concepts for the new location.  The original design for the location included ten single linear LED lights suspended at differing, angular dimensions.  In the end, Dave changed the design to be a single rectangular fixture that was 28ft x 7ft wide.  Karice was able to use its very own custom aluminum extrusion to create the lighting masterpiece that resides at the Olympic Village location in Vancouver.  Using extra bright LEDs, we were able to provide lighting that would illuminate the entire restaurant.

Custom seismic bracing had to be engineered and desgined to meet the strict requirements of residing in a seismic zone.  The owners of Tractor didn’t want to see aircraft cable bracing, so a system of metal flat bars was developed to accomplish the task.

SHROOMS – Design Lighting for IDS Bar
SHROOMS – Design Lighting for IDS Bar 1024 768 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

SHROOMS! – WHAT? Are we crazy?

Kalu Interiors approached Karice in April 2016 to help them with their IDS Vancouver Central Bar Display.  The theme planned was “Alice In Wonderland”.  “What, how can this be?” we told Aleem “we are already there, our display booth is to be a whimsical theme, as we are designing and building the “TREE OF LIGHT”.

Karice was delighted to travel down the rabbit hole with Kalu to design and craft the lights for the Kalu central bar.  We were given the project carte blanche, so this is when the real fun began.  Lead designer at Karice, Maurice Dery, began contemplating the story of Alice In Wonderland.  One night, while sitting in the bathtub, design innovations began to populate the mind of our master designer.  The idea of huge mushrooms began to take shape.  And so began the journey to create the lights that showcased at the IDS Vancouver 2016 Show.

Our process began drafting ideas on AutoCAD inventor and AutoCAD drafting.  Preliminary sketches included a hammered copper dome.  Conscious of the heavy weight of the concept, the design eventually morphed into an aluminum composition.  The Gills in a mushroom are always a strong identifiable part of a mushroom.  The gills in a mushroom heavily influenced our final design for our Shroom Light.

Using thin gauge aluminum shapes, the mushroom gills, thirty in all, were cut on our OMAX waterjet machining center.  Specially designed tops and bottoms were created that would enable the gills to be mounted on to a center column.  The light is illuminated using energy efficent LEDs.

Once illuminated, the light becomes an interesting play of lighting.  The inner core of the fixture, glowing a warm color temperature casts and interesting play of shadows on the gills.  A down light is also incorporated into the design to provide functionally lighting.

GOOD ANIMAL and KARICE COLLABORATE ON CUSTOM LIGHTING
GOOD ANIMAL and KARICE COLLABORATE ON CUSTOM LIGHTING 1024 768 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Good Animal, Karice Enterprises collaborate to create Custom Design Pendant Lights

In December 2014, Karice was approached by Vancouver Lighting Designer, Hesam Ghaemi to collaborate with him on a new custom lighting installation for the new Earls to be built at Mall Millennia in Orlando, Florida, USA.  Hesam had a new idea for custom design pendant lights.

Two lighting designs were quoted to Good Animal in February of 2015.  Only one of Hesam’s lighting designs was selected by the Earls Design Team to be used in their new project in Orlando.

Shortly thereafter, the project was awarded to Good Animal to build fifteen new custom designed pendant lights for the new location in Orlando.  Karice was contracted by Good Animal to further design and craft the pendant lights, and to bring Hesam’s vision to life.

Karice immediately went to work to prepare the shop drawings for the project.  Round four shop drawings were approved by Earls in the fall of 2015.  In December, Karice began the process of drafting the mechanical construction drawings.  Production began shortly thereafter.

Fifteen custom design pendant luminaires were crafted by the team at Karice for the new project.  Design challenges included the sloped ceiling that the lights were to be mounted to.  An approximate angle was provided by architects.  Using this angle Karice designed a two piece canopy that was sloped as well as adjustable.  Site conditions are never what they seem, so  this was calculated into the design of the custom ceiling canopy.

Slight aesthetic design changes did occur along the way.  The back metal diffusers were originally black, and were changed to gold.  The height of the glass diffusers were modified, to suit the bulb that was eventually selected.  Everything had to be perfect for the new project, and perfect it was.  The final result was stunning.

BEST OF YEAR AWARDS 2016 – LIGHTING SCONCE – ELECTRON
BEST OF YEAR AWARDS 2016 – LIGHTING SCONCE – ELECTRON 1024 437 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

INTERIOR DESIGN’S BEST OF YEAR AWARDS

It’s time to vote for the best products of Interior Design’s Best of Year Awards for 2016!  Our entry is in the Best of Year Lighting Sconce category.

Please vote  HERE   for our entry.

Voting is open from Oct 3rd – 14th, 2016 in a public gallery on boyawards.interiordesign.net

Karice’s custom design electron wall sconce is one of the submissions on the “LIGHTING SCONCE” category.

In physics, the electron is a subatomic particle with a negative elementary, electric charge. Electrons radiate energy in the form of protons when accelerated. Thus began the inspiration for the light that we designed and titled The Electron. The Electron Wall sconce reflects the image and nature of its namesake. What emerged from our inspiration is a beautiful, simplistic design that can be used in a variety of decors. It is illuminated with energy efficient LED strips through frosted clear acrylic along the inner and outer rings.

The Electron is a wall mounted LED luminaire for indoor use. It has a beautiful, simplistic design that is modern and futuristic in appearance. LED lighting technology enabled the creation of this unique design and also produced an energy efficient luminaire.

The Electron is made using aluminum sheet, aluminum shafting, and frosted acrylic sheet. The aluminum sheet and acrylic are cut using an OMAX waterjet machining center. Next, using a CNC milling machine and lathe, the aluminum is processed further. Once the aluminum parts are machined, they have a brushed finish applied on all exposed surfaces. The parts are then sent for anodizing. The aluminum is anodized in silver, black, or gold. A dimmable 12V LED strip is used as the source of illumination. The LED driver is mounted integrally into the wall plate.

The wall plate for the Electron has no exposed fasteners. A custom designed mounting plate was designed and created to enable the mounting of the luminaire with no visible fasteners. A simple set screw at the bottom of the wall plate fastens to the mounting plate.

Dimensions: 9-7/8″ or 250mm diameter x 4.5″ or 114.3 mm Colors Available Are: Anodized Clear, Black or Light Gold Lamping: LED strip 12V Lumens 840, 3000K, 8.4 watts Dimmable LED Driver

OUR LITTLE BUGGERS – FIREFLY LIGHTS
OUR LITTLE BUGGERS – FIREFLY LIGHTS 1024 678 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

OUR LITTLE BUGGERS! – JUST FOR FUN

The team at Karice is out to have fun.  I mean real fun.  Who would have thought that Fireflies could become lights!

One Saturday afternoon, lead designer Maurice L. Dery was dreaming about fireflies.  How he would like to be out in nature enjoying the fresh air, and thinking of new ways to enhance his “TREE OF LIGHT”.  Our tree display was well under construction for the IDS Vancouver 2016 design show, and the idea of fireflies was a sure tie in.  So naturally, the idea came to him to create a light that would become known as Karice’s “LITTLE BUGGER”.

The body is CNC machined using solid copper round bar. The wings and the feet have been cut from solid copper sheet metal using our water jet machining center.  Once parts are soldered together, they are tumbled in our newest tumbling machine, to bring the copper to a bright shiny finish.  The finish doesn’t last though, because the air quickly oxidizes the copper to a warm orange/brown hue.

Little Bugger Firefly Light DesignDSC_3899

Once product is completed, of course it needs to be photographed.  What better place to photograph this new light design, but out in the wilds of Nature, at Redwood Park.  Karice comes complete with its own resident in house photographer J.N Dery.

Wiring the little buggers was real fun.  The coaxial cable selected for this project is so thin, that the job became a complicated  event.  Once wired, special arduino boards were programmed, so on display, the lights will glow like luminescence with varying wavelengths of light, just like they would on the real bug.  The LED bulbs were also tinted green, so a illusion of phosphorescence resulted.  Hanging on the tree, these little buggers are really at home.  Some are even crawling on the trunk.

New Innovative LED lighting design –  with the IDS Vancouver 2016 design show quickly approaching, Karice has been so busy preparing.   We will be featuring six brand new lighting designs at the show.  Our TIME light can be seen in Dinner by Design, SHROOM in the Central Bar, and the remaining four lights can be seen in booth #911 – IDS Vancouver 2016.

CONTEST TO NAME THE LIGHT – Karice’s newest addition to our lighting collection is looking for a name.  We are asking the design community to help us “Name the LIGHT”.

ENTER CONTEST HERE

We have been so busy preparing for the IDS Vancouver 2016 Design show and we have run out of time.  This light is so new, it doesn’t even have a name yet.  We are asking the design community to participate in a competition to “NAME THE LIGHT”.  The winner will win a triple pendant version of our new light (value $1,100.00).  Winner to be announced in October.

This light was designed by Karice’s lead designer, Maurice L. Dery.  The light is made from CNC machined aluminum components and acrylic.  The light diffuser is frosted clear acrylic to obscure the single LED bulb that is used in this fixture.

The aluminum parts are anodized to offer a rich looking refined finish.  The illumination is energy efficient LED technology.  The long lasting bulb is 2700K and delivers 100 lumens.

Suspended by a single co-axial cable, the light appears to be floating in mid air, eliminating the need for heavy wire.  Low voltage lighting affords us this ability wire our lights in this manner. Our triple pendant will have a 6″ diameter canopy to suspend the three lights in an array.

DIAMOND LUXENNEA – New Custom Installation for Residential Home
DIAMOND LUXENNEA – New Custom Installation for Residential Home 768 1024 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

In June of this year, our client, Angelo Minichiello. contacted us from New Market, Ontario.  Angelo loved our Diamond Luxennea chandelier.  He had the perfect spot in mind for this custom light – A grand splash was to be made in his front entrance.  Angelo wanted a few subtle changes made in the design.  The top, seven foot diameter ring was to have the lights point up and out, instead of down.  Color temperature was also key, so a 6500K color temperature was selected for the LEDs that would be used in the light.

shop drawing

Karice went to work on the shop drawings for our client.  One hurdle to overcome was the sloped ceiling where the light would be mounted.  Using trigonometry, Angelo was able to provide the team at Karice with the exact angle of the ceiling.  Using this custom angle, a custom two-piece, sloped canopy was designed and made for the light.

With the new light to be installed, it was important to our client that the existing lights in the house be modified, so that there would be continuity in the newly updated space.  Four existing pendants were dismantled, and all parts were shipped to Karice for re-finishing.  New hexagonal ceiling canopies were also crafted by Karice to complete the tie in.  The parts were sandblasted, and an identical oil rubbed bronze finish was applied to the new light, new ceiling canopies and existing lighting parts.

DSC_5832 - Diamond Luxennea for custom installation in New Market

Once the custom light was completed, we went to work carefully packaging everything for it’s long journey across the country.  A custom wooden crate was made to package the finished product.  A week later, the light arrived safely at it’s new home.  Once installed, the final results could not be more pleasing.  The Diamond Luxennea, is perfect in it’s new home.  The pictures show the stunning results.

The Electron Wall Sconce Wins GOLD at the IDA awards

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The Electron Wall Sconce – Lighting Design at it’s best.  Karice has been designing and creating light fixtures since 2000.  In 2015, we decided to design our own unique line of lighting products.  Thus began the journey to design and create the lighting fixture known as ELECTRON.

The LED technology available to a lighting designer enables us to create new innovative designs in lighting.  We could not achieve these designs without the resources available to us today.  It has been an exciting exercise to design and create new lighting fixtures such as the Electron.

Reflecting the image and nature of its namesake, the Electron wall sconce luminaire represents the circular path of an electron around the nucleus of an atom.  The aesthetic is minimalistic, while masking a highly innovative creation below the surface.  Made with aluminum and acrylic, the Electron’s irreducibly complex engineering hides all fasteners and wiring, and maintains the ring’s suspended independence without compromising beauty or functionality.  Using dimmable energy-efficient LED technology, it illuminates from its inner and outer edges without shadowing.  A custom user-friendly adapter plate mounts the fixture to ensure easy, efficient, headache-free installation.

Preliminary designs and prototypes began in October 2015, with the final prototype completed in December 2015.  The design of the electron was enhanced by the tools of our trade.  Using AutoCAD, we were able to draft up the design for the Electron.  Once CAD designs were completed, we went to work with the manufacturing process.  Our waterjet machining center, CNC milling machine and CNC lathe were all employed to enable us to create the light fixture.  A test assembly was made before the parts were sent out for finishing.  The aluminum components were anodized to give a beautiful rich looking finish.  We were pleased with our finished product.

Western Living Designer of the Year 2016 Nomination for Maurice L. Dery
Western Living Designer of the Year 2016 Nomination for Maurice L. Dery 768 400 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

We are happy to announce that Maurice L. Dery has been nominated in the “INDUSTRIAL” category for Western Living’s Designer of the Year Competition for 2016. Maurice has been a designer in his own right for 37 years, designing everything from utilitarian equipment, to architectural metal and lighting products.

Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Maurice’s family roots  in Canada can be traced back to 1679 when the first settlers immigrated to Canada from France. Maurice is Canadian, through and through, whose native tongue is actually French.  As a teenager, Maurice designed and built his own hydroplane boat, and has continued experimenting with new ideas ever since.  Maurice has two Red Seal trade tickets – iron-worker and machinist. His first architectural metalwork project was a metal gate in 1985 for a residence in Edmonton, Alberta.  His own company, Karice Enterprises Ltd. was launched in 1993.  This marked the year of making a career out of metalwork design.  In 2000, at the urging from Robert Clark, of CLO Design in Seattle, Washington, Maurice went into the lighting design and build business. Karice’s first commercial lighting job was for the Milestones Restaurant Chain for their newly renovated project in Whistler, BC.  Maurice has collaborated with the design team at Earls for literally every lighting project in their restaurant chain across North America.

When it comes to design, it is important to realize, that it is not just about the DESIGN CONCEPT.  As Steve Jobs so succinctly quoted  “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works”.  Maurice has the experience, know how, and creative ability that has enabled many designers to bring their design concepts to a reality.  Maurice is the designer who figures out “How it works!”

WL Maurice DOTY 2016 shortlist

We are so blessed and grateful to the judges who shortlisted Maurice for the honor of this announcement. Thank you Western Living Magazine.

Collaboration: The Future of Design (A’ Design Award Interview: Part III)
Collaboration: The Future of Design (A’ Design Award Interview: Part III) 150 150 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Over the last two days, we have posted snippets of Maurice Dery’s A’ Design Award interview. Part I focused on the differences between design and art (click here if you missed it), and Part II highlighted a “day-in-the-life” of Maurice (click here).

Today, we bring you Part III: Collaboration, The Future of Design.

(For the full interview, click here.)

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
MD: I prefer to work as a team. Too often though, my designs are completely my own. But as I age, I am making a concerted effort to pass on my knowledge and skills to the next generation, so I am co-designing with younger designers as much as possible.

FS: How do you think the “design field” is evolving? What is the future of design?
MD: Collaboration. The synergy that comes when diverse disciplines unite with a common purpose is powerful. I believe in teamwork, not just with my internal team but with other leaders in the industry. The more generous we are in working together, the greater our innovation will be. The leaders of the future will be the collaborators who can best bring highly talented people of diverse disciplines together.

FS: What is your “golden rule” in design?
MD: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. As a designer, seek excellence. Seek innovation. Seek originality…with EVERY project! When a client hires you, treat the design with the same level of care and attention that you would if it was your own. Make other people famous because of the amazing work you do for them. Such an approach will ensure you are always in high demand! And, in time, you will receive your dues.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
MD: I always like to ask the question: “Is the piece selfish and exclusively about me and my expression, or is it generous and purposeful – making a positive impact on those it interacts with?” That is what differentiates the finest work: it is responsible and forward-thinking. The same goes for environmental consideration. We are to be good stewards of our resources and planet, and aim to leave the world a better place for future generations.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
MD: Look at their skills and abilities, by looking at their track record and longevity. If they have an outstanding portfolio but they’ve only been in the business for two years, you need to think twice about how honest they’re being. No amount of talent can make an expert overnight. A true master will have years and years and years of consistently creating brilliant designs – from start to finish. Age does not make a master. Consistently innovating and pushing creative boundaries over many years does.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
MD: To be able to actually create the design you come up with. If you can’t create it, why design it? Having a technical understanding of how things work is critical.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
MD: For Design: AutoCAD.  For Development: I stick to metalwork, so I do a lot of fabrication – TIG and MIG welding, grinding, etc. – as well as machining and waterjet cutting.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
MD: Develop practical skills. Great ideas are common, but excellent execution is rare – really rare! Few people have the skillset to actually bring their ideas to life. Few can actually CREATE the brilliant design.

Also, know that the difference between good and great is in the little details. Master the basics. Truly become an expert on all the fundamentals of your discipline, and over time you will be known as the best in your field.

FS: What was your most important job experience?
MD: In my late twenties, I decided to make a career change out of ironworking, after replacing a coworker who was blown off a bridge. After that, I decided to refine my metalworking skills and get a machining ticket.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
MD: Positives: You get to create things! It is very fulfilling to have an idea, design and develop it, and then see it through to completion. Being a designer is very rewarding.

Negatives: Finding the balance between confidence and humility is the greatest challenge of any designer, in my opinion. You have to be confident but you must be humble. If you lose sight of either, you will fail altogether. When no one knows about you, it is hard to persevere and continually perfect your work. And when you’re successful, it is equally challenging to continue pushing forward – the temptation is to sit back and enjoy your success.

FS: How do you work with companies?
MD: Collaboratively. I take my skills and expertise in design and metalwork and apply those to help others reach their final goal.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
MD: A day. A week. A month? It entirely depends on the project. Some stuff we have developed from start to finish in an afternoon. Other projects have a life of their own. We have had some designs that took six months to complete.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
MD: BUILDEX Vancouver, in February 2016, was the last exhibition I attended. Although my work was displayed at the Architectural Digest Design Show in New York City in March 2016. The next exhibition I will be personally attending and displaying at is the Interior Design Show Vancouver in September 2016.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
MD: More original pieces. I want to keep pushing the creative envelope, and leave a legacy that my son is proud to inherit.

A Day in the Life of Maurice Dery (A’ Design Award Interview: Part II)
A Day in the Life of Maurice Dery (A’ Design Award Interview: Part II) 150 150 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Yesterday, we began the three part series of Maurice Dery’s Silver A’ Design Award interview. Part I focused on the differences between design and art (click here if you missed it), and tomorrow we’ll talk about the future of design (click here).

Today, we’ll look at a day in the life of Maurice, Karice’s founder and lead designer.

(For the full interview, click here.)

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
MD: I live with my family in Surrey, a coastal suburb of Vancouver, BC, Canada. This is increasingly becoming a world-class city for innovative design. I think this is a result of a combination of things: Vancouver’s adventurous pioneer heritage, the natural awe-inspiring beauty of the region, and the melting pot of diverse ethnicities. This creates a haven for inspiration and creativity. We’re also a very entrepreneurial people. We’re not afraid to take risks and do what hasn’t been done before. As a designer, it is a healthy atmosphere to be surrounded by. However, Canada is a very young country, and Vancouver in particular is a relatively new city (it’s a little over a hundred years old). As such, we do not have the depth of history and heritage of most other countries and cities. And in the design world, we still seem to lack an identity. Thankfully that’s changing, as Canadian west coast design and craftsmanship begins to be recognized across the globe.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
MD: (1) A trellis that I designed for my wife 23 years ago. (2) A nautilus bench (3) My boat! It has beautiful, beautiful lines. (4) My system of McIntosh amps (5) A quad rack I designed for carrying four full-sized ATVs on a shortbox truck

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
MD: Every day is different. Very different! Some days I am at my computer creating concepts and drafting designs. Other days I’m experimenting and building prototypes. Still others, I am on the shop floor finishing the final product. But every day I am leading my team and interacting with clients, while trying to make room in each day to be creative and explore new ideas.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
MD: Whether it is our own concept or a client’s idea, we begin by solidifying the conceptual drawings and design objective. We then draft our initial designs and being developing prototypes. We always have formal blueprints drafted before prototyping, and we always prototype before production begins. Once we’re happy with a prototype, we then begin production.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
MD: Good question! This is something I struggle with every day. It is hard to balance creativity with productivity. And, truthfully, I believe the answer is teamwork. By having a high quality team, you can rely on others to carry the load. If you’re doing everything yourself, you don’t have the time to pursue your inspirations.

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
MD: “Can you build this?”

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post, as we wrap up this Q&A and discuss the future of design

Design vs. Art (A’ Design Award Interview: Part I)
Design vs. Art (A’ Design Award Interview: Part I) 150 150 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

For the most part, our blog highlights recent projects we’ve completed or new products we’ve launched. So we thought we’d do something a bit different for this post.

The following is an excerpt from Maurice Dery’s (MD) interview on April 21, 2016 with Frank Scott (FS) of DesignPRWire. The interview was part of the A’ Design Award process, after Maurice and his son, Jordan Dery, won silver at the world’s largest design competition. This is the first post in a three part series.

(For the full interview, click here.)

FS: What is “design” for you?
MD: Art seeks expression. Design seeks solutions. I’m looking for both in all original pieces I create. Design is all about purpose. It navigates and overcomes seemingly impossible challenges with solutions that are technically functional and aesthetically beautiful. Art, on the other hand, is articulate. It is the culmination and expression of skill and understanding. I aim to reflect both artistry and thoughtful design in all I do.

I only want to take on projects that others are afraid to. I believe the intersection of art and design is daring, explorative, and adventurous in achieving solutions. It’s also expressive and aesthetically pleasing. It’s master workmanship: balancing beauty with functionality. This balance is what I seek in each original piece I create.

As such, I consider myself an artisan: a practical craftsman who is one half artist and one half designer.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
MD: Challenging ones! I love to make the seemingly “impossible” possible. If you tell me it can’t be done, I love proving it can! Specifically though, large chandeliers are probably my favourite product type to create.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
MD: Metal. Steel specifically because I know it the best. My father was an ironworker for 55 years, so I come by it naturally! (His brother, my uncle, was an ironworker, too.)

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
MD: Sitting in the bathtub at 10pm at night, finally relaxing at the end of a hard day’s work.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
MD: Everyday life.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What’s your approach to design?
MD: True to form. Meaning: I prefer not to be an abstract designer. I like things to be refined and defined.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
MD: Oh! I’m happy. I feel exhilarated. I feel anxious to see the final results. I love seeing my thoughts come to life.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
MD: Satisfaction. It’s very rewarding.

FS: What makes a design successful?
MD: A successful design is one that solves a problem or moves the profession forward. It makes a contribution. This is achieved when a design is both beautiful and functional, giving it value and purpose.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
MD: Quality of finish.

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post on A Day in the Life of Maurice, followed by Collaboration: the Future of Design

Sprocket LED Chandelier
The Sprocket
The Sprocket 1024 576 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Introducing Maurice Dery’s Sprocket

How many 10-foot by 10-foot (3m x 3m) chandeliers showcase 37 years of experience, while incorporating one-of-a-kind energy efficient lighting technology?  Only one.  The Sprocket is the culmination of Maurice Dery’s career as an industrial artisan.  Maurice wanted to create an epic project to reflect his custom lighting design expertise, while highlighting his architectural metalworking experience.  The Sprocket reflects just that.

Karice Sprocket and Chain LED Chandelier

Sprocket and Chain Industrial Chandelier

The gigantic LED chandelier is a functioning gear, made to scale.  The inner 5-ft diameter steel sprocket was meticulously crafted to not only interlock with the chain but to have a finish that reflects the true wear-and-tear of a real sprocket.  The outer aluminum chain has been built in modules, so it can be as long or short as desired.  Both the chain and sprocket have acrylic facing, illuminated by dimmable energy-efficient LEDs.

Suspended by aircraft cables, the Sprocket appears to be floating in mid-air.  As you’ll notice, there are no power cables or visible fasteners.  It’s been designed to hide all ‘visual pollution’ to give the highest aesthetic quality.

Karice lighting technology

Innovative Lighting Technology

To create this innovative lighting fixture, Karice had to invent its own lighting system.  The light is powered and supported by one-of-a-kind lighting technology invented by Karice.

This is the type of innovation Maurice Dery and the team at Karice Enterprises are known for.  When technology or components don’t exist, they create them!  This love for creating the “impossible” is the essence of the Sprocket.  It’s why Karice exists.

West Coast Canadian Design and Manufacturing

Vancouver is increasingly becoming a world-renowned design hub. This is a well-known fact. What is less known is that manufacturing on Canada’s West Coast is alive and well! Karice is proudly producing 100% Canadian-made products every day. Additionally, the candidate will be:

  • Creative: continually pushing innovative boundaries
  • Efficient: always seeking the most cost-effective and time-saving method to work, without compromising quality standards
  • Detailed: obsessed with excellence, knowing the difference between good and great is in the little details

  • Versatile: having a diverse skillset
  • Flexible: willing to work on a wide variety of projects
  • Teachable: eager to learn and open to feedback

Experience and Qualifications

Handmade Tradeshow Booth 1024 678 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

BuildEx Vancouver 2016 was a huge success! Not only were we overwhelmed with new connections (and humbled by the positive reception), but we had so much fun creating our booth…literally our entire booth!! We didn’t just feature ours and Luke Lamp Co’s lighting, but the aluminum booth itself, the display table, and even the stools were built by Karice at our South Surrey facility. Pretty cool, eh?

That was something we kept hearing throughout the show: “All this is made right here in Vancouver?!”  Yup! Artisanal manufacturing is alive and well. It was great to showcase some of our recent developments, as well as Luke Lamp Co’s rope light.

But most of all, it was great to reconnect with old friends and make new acquaintances. At the end of the day, that’s what good business is all about: people.

(P.S. Stay tuned for what we’ve been working on most recently…it’ll blow your mind!)

Frankie's Chilliwack
Frankie’s Chilliwack
Frankie’s Chilliwack 1024 678 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

We had a lot of fun working on the feature light for Frankie’s Chilliwack. The brand new Frankie’s Italian Kitchen & Bar in Chilliwack, BC was the brilliance of Monica Jeffers Interior Design. MJID created the concept and provided the beautiful design.

Classic Aesthetic, Modern Functionality

What we love most about it is how much it highlights our diversity and versatility. It has a traditional European look and yet it is functionally hi-tech, with an ultralight aluminum frame and an energy efficient LED lamp. The finish, in particular, is something we are very proud of. This may be our best light feature yet.

Custom Manufacturing to the Core

A lot went into this piece. Nearly every single component was custom crafted. The frame was fabricated out of aluminum. The acrylic diffuser incorporated a custom printed bronze design. The scrollwork brackets were custom fabricated. And the finial protruding from the base was custom CNC machined out of solid billet aluminum.

Beautiful Frankie’s Chilliwack

The final product hangs high above the main dining area. and is approximately 4-feet tall and nearly 5-feet in diameter. It’s beautiful.

Pendant Lighting Styles, Shades, Materials and Colours
Pendant Lighting Styles, Shades, Materials and Colours 150 150 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Pendant lighting styles are very unique and diverse in the modern world. They come in many different colours such as black, white, red, blue, orange – the sky is the limit.

Pendant Lighting Styles and Shades – Wide Variety of Materials and Finishes

Pendant lights are incredibly versatile and stylish lighting fixtures that work well with most interior spaces. For one, pendant light shades come in different materials and finishes. At Karice, we stick to things like copper, silver, iron, brass, glass… and avoid things like cotton, polyester, etc as we design and build pendants for commercial and retail spaces as opposed to residential spaces.

Popular Fabric Pendant Shades VS Treated Wood and Metal

Some popular fabric pendant shades can also be made out of linen, burlap, hemp, jute and rattan and paired with wood or metal panels. At Karice we prefer a more polished, professional and sleek look and feel so we may opt to design a shade of wood and metal – and omit the fabric.

Fabric Shades for Residential Dwellings – We Focus on Metals for Businesses and Professional Establishments

Fabric shades are more suited for residential dwellings in the living room or bedroom. Since we are a custom manufacturer and metalwork outfit, our products are more tailored for business owners of restaurants or establishments where an atmosphere for the public needs to be created.

We are mentioning fabric here because we are very passionate about what we do and know that once you hire us for your project you will be glad you didn’t choose fabric! Our award winning designer really knows his stuff.

Pendant Lighting is Soft, Diffused and Striking – We Carefully Design Based on Where Your Lights Will be Installed

Our pendant lighting styles provide soft, diffused lighting without any harsh glare as we carefully take everything into consideration, including where the lighting will be placed.

Glass Pendant Shades for Elegance and to Open a Room Up – Clear, Frosted, Tinted, Etched, Any Style, Any Way

Glass pendant shades can add a touch of elegance and open a room up because they are see through and airy in appearance. Different treatments like frosted, tiffany style and tinted can create a beautiful look. Metal pendant shades also act as statement pieces and can be polished chrome, oil-rubbed bronze, brushed or glossed nickel, black iron finish or anything else that you would like. We do it all and believe nothing is impossible!

Benefits of Ordering Pendant Lighting from a Custom Lighting Manufacturer Rather Than Amazon, Home Depot, IKEA, Costco

Pendant lights of various colours, materials and styles may be found at Amazon, Costco, Home Depot and IKEA, but your choices are limited to what they currently have in stock. One model may have the perfect design but the wrong colour. Another might be in the right colour but in a style that doesn’t match the space where it will be installed.

The bottom line here though is that these stores are awesome for homes and small offices. In restaurants, retail chains, hotels or upscale environments, you need a custom manufacturer to create a look that is perfect and professional for you and your patrons.

Choose a Custom Lighting Manufacturer Over a Retail Store for Quality, Durability, Design and Reliability

With custom lighting manufacturers, pendant lights can be made in the exact colour, style and material that you are looking for. They are also much more high end and “finished”. Hiring a custom manufacturer will save you time and money in the long run because instead of browsing through countless models in retail stores, you have the freedom to create something truly custom that will match your space.

At Karice we build things to last too, so they will last for many years to come. Compared to cheap options, that could be embarrassing, we ensure you that our work has high quality craftsmanship and has been engineered correctly.

Order Modern Pendant Lighting for Your Business – Kitchen, Kitchen Island, Lobby, Entrance or any Room You’d Like to Spice Up

The design flexibility of modern pendant lighting makes it ideal for kitchen, lobby, entrance or any room. Pendant lighting doesn’t take up much room so lights can be suspended just about anywhere. For a chique and minimalist style, you may want to consider pendant lighting in an open room where they can act as a focal point. Pendant lights can be made in many different shapes and sizes too, in order to match your space.

Contact Us Today About Pendant Lighting Styles and See How We Can Create a Stunning Lighting System for You

Pendant lights make for excellent task lighting fixtures when hung over kitchen islands, nooks, crannies or other tight spaces where you need light, but have limited space. Custom Floating LED Chandelier – The Diamond Luxennea
Custom Floating LED Chandelier – The Diamond Luxennea 1024 678 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Our custom floating LED chandelier, The Diamond Luxenna was fabricated by Karice Enterprises LTD. We are a custom lighting manufacturer in BC. The Diamond Luxennea chandelier is inspired by geometric shapes and the Florentine Diamond. Photos presented are of our two-tier Diamond Luxennea Light.

Large Scale Custom Chandelier – 9 Sided Geometric Shape

Inspired by geometric shapes, Karice began the process of developing this large scale custom chandelier. A nonagon or enneagon is a closed plane figure made up of nine equal sides.  Like the “Florentine Diamond”, both the Diamond Luxennea and the famous stone have nine sides.

Why We Named this Custom Chandelier “Lux”

Lux is the latin word for light and LUX is also known as a standardized unit of measurement of light intensity. This light fixture’s namesake comes from the words Lux and Enneagon.

Unique Outward and Downward Illumination for Maximum Light

We love the nine sided shape, as this offers much visual interest. Some of our most recent creations have their illumination pointing inward. Although beautiful, this arrangement does not always emit the greatest amount of LUX / light.  With careful consideration given to creating a greater amount of LUX, we decided to have the illumination on this light fixture pointing outwards and downwards.

Inspired by the facets in a diamonds, we had the sides of the Diamond Luxennea pointing down at 45 degrees. This arrangement gives the illusion of a greater amount of faceted sides.

Diamond Luxenna Custom Chandelier Design – Large Scale Light Fixture Manufacturer

The Diamond Luxennea is yet another original chandelier design by Karice Enterprises Ltd. Our vast experience in creating large scale light fixtures and lighting installations was put to use.

The enneagon shapes are seven foot and five foot diameter. We have photographed the Diamond Luxennea on top of a Porsche 911 Carrera so that one is able to grasp the large scale of this lighting creation. The hanging height of each light was meticulously set. A continuous visual line is evident from one light to the other.

Aluminum Extrusion, TIG Welding and Bending Create a Seamless and Precise Floating LED Chandelier

Utilizing design innovations developed by Karice from previous projects, we were able to make the Luxennea Diamond Light Fixture come to life. Karice’s own unique custom aluminum extrusion was once again put to use to make this awe inspiring light fixture. Carefully TIG welded and blended in, we were able to achieve a seamless construction. We have used energy efficient LEDs as the Diamond Luxennea’s primary light source. Suspended by aircraft cables the Diamond Luxennea literally appears to be floating in the air. Our floating LED chandelier is truly a work of art.

All fixture design, product development and manufacturing of the Diamond Luxennea were completed at the Karice facility, by Karice employees. The powder coated finishing was outsourced to local vendors.

Benefits of Chandelier Lighting – Modern, Rustic & Quality Comparison
Benefits of Chandelier Lighting – Modern, Rustic & Quality Comparison 150 150 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

There are many benefits of chandelier lighting. Not only do they create ambient lighting, but they’re also decorative pieces. Chandeliers can add a fancy touch, bring on the wow factor, create a focal point or set the tone in a space. Another bonus is that they won’t crowd your restaurant, shop or showroom as they are hung from the ceiling.

Benefits of Modern vs Rustic Chandelier Lighting – Explore the Various Types of Chandelier Lighting

Aesthetics-wise, limitless style possibilities are a big plus when it comes to custom lights, and chandeliers are no exception. Whether you’re in the market for upscale or more affordable / “cheap chandelier lighting, there are tons of options ranging from modern to rustic.

With modern chandelier lighting, think sleek and striking masterpieces – hanging works of art that usually combine metal and glass and feature clean lines and geometric forms. If you’re going for a lodge or cabin feel, rustic chandelier lighting can make that statement for you using materials like stained wood and metal. For added depth and an added country feel, finishes with a relaxed and rugged quality to them are great options.

Reasons to Buy Chandelier Lighting for Sale From a Custom Lighting Manufacturer Instead of Vendors Such as Costco and IKEA

Shopping at retail vendors like Costco and IKEA may be intriguing, especially if there is a sale, but those types of establishments are really best served for home and small office lighting. For a restaurant, retail space, showroom or shop you will need industrial grade design, materials, construction and installation to ensure the safety of your clients and customers. Choosing a skilled manufacturer like Karice will ensure that your chandelier lighting is durable and well maintained for many years to come. Karice also manufactures all parts needed for each job, right in house which adds to the durability. Manufacturing all parts in house also means turnaround times are much faster as parts do not need to be ordered. The dedicated, experienced team at Karice is a far superior choice for your establishment compared to cheap chandelier lighting design, production and DIY installation that is typically offered in retail chains. Another benefit of choosing a custom lighting and metal work manufacturer like Karice is that you can choose some materials and assist with the design process to create a chandelier that will be perfect for your space.

Luxennea – Linked LED Chandelier, Custom Lighting
Luxennea – Linked LED Chandelier, Custom Lighting 1024 394 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Introducing Luxennea – a new lighting series from Karice using LED lighting technology. Energy efficient and elegant, the permanently “linked” Luxennea is suspended by aircraft cables to give the illusion that it is floating in the air.

Inspired by geometric shapes, the Linked Luxennea is the first in this original series, which is the culmination of Karice’s intellectual property on previous projects. The sophistication and craftsmanship of the Luxennea collection is a true reflection of 23 years in the industry.

It’s also big! The large chandelier combines two 5-foot diameter enneagon rings. As viewed in this blog post, the two-ringed Linked Luxennea is 8-feet 6-inches long. (For context, we have photographed the Linked Luxennea above our Novem table, another original piece by Karice.)

The numerous custom components needed to create the Linked Luxennea were designed and manufactured in-house here at Karice. An aluminum extrusion was developed. Special hangers were created to enable handling of the two geometric shapes simultaneously (this was especially needed during the powder coating process), and a unique in-house technology was developed to power the light without wiring.

As shown, the Linked Luxennea is just two rings, but it can be configured with as many links and shapes as desired, suspended in a variety of configurations. The tilted angle can easily be adjusted, and the lights can also be suspended further apart. So from this preset, an infinite number of creative possibilities can be achieved.  The combinations are unlimited.

All fixture design, product development, and manufacturing of the Linked Luxennea were completed by Karice at its facility in Surrey (just outside Vancouver, BC, Canada).  The powder coated finishing was outsourced to local vendors.

Below are some highlights we think you will find interesting. If you want the full OMAX jet machining centre writeup, click here.

  • Having an OMAX in house means Karice can get jobs done faster as they do not have to wait for parts – they can make it happen in their very own shop
  • Karice used the OMAX jet machining system in favour of outsourcing for laser cutting for a project with Earls of Vancouver, BC (also worked on Earls projects across Canada and a location in USA).
  • Karice makes rotating sculpture inspired by Olympic rings for Sky Sports with a short deadline and delivers on time
  • Improvements were done to a Karice customer’s design in the lumber industry for a steel blade to include welded carbide tips. This improvement ensured a longer lasting blade and the customer also saved money as Karice was able to produce a less expensive product
