Collaborative Custom Lighting Components for Luke Lamp Co.

The Langhorne Collection by Luke Lamp Co.

The Langhorne Collection is a line of ingenious and original light features by Luke Kelly of Luke Lamp Co. in Mamaroneck, New York.

When we connected, Luke was making the lights himself but wasn’t completely satisfied with the various components he was using to produce it.

The Karice team was able to improve Luke’s rope light by CNC machining custom ends and links to allow for effortless sculptural customization. The machined components were designed and manufactured by Karice, using custom anodized aluminum. Not only did it improve the functionality, but it also refined its beauty.

Karice featured one of Luke’s rope lights at BuildEx Vancouver 2016, and it proved to be the star of the show! Since the fixture is easily reconfigured, people couldn’t resist the urge to interact with it. It is truly an original!

LUSH COSMETICS Custom Lighting – Trough Light

Posted by Karice Lighting

Custom Lighting manufactured for LUSH Cosmetics. This trough pendant was designed by and for Lush Cosmetics, and developed and manufactured by Karice.

The Lush team wanted a custom light fixture with a reclaimed and industrial look, based on a previous copper light design at their head office in the UK.

Karice built the light using hot rolled iron, with fully welded end caps, and the diffusers were cut out of acrylic to eliminate all hot spots.

But, it wasn’t just the look they were going for. The light needed to be environmentally friendly and energy efficient. To accomplish this, the light was custom designed to mount a tray to hold LED lights and drivers.

The first of many in this series can be seen at Lush’s newly renovated store at Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Custom Geometric Light for Earls Assembly Row (Boston, MA)

Posted by Karice Lighting

The Geometric Light was a collaborative effort in 2014 between a local lighting designer, Earls Design Team and Karice.

Working together with the Earl’s design team and a local lighting designer in 2014, Karice help realize the vision and create two iterations of this lighting, including creating a custom substructure and addressing numerous site-specific, engineering and fabrication challenges, including building on the first design by using an aluminum extrusion in the second iteration of this light. A big obstacle we had to overcome in the development of this light was the site conditions in Boston. There were so many mechanical obstructions in the ceiling that it would be impossible to hang each of the twelve geometric lights individually. So we went to work to design a tubular support structure that could support the twelve geometric lights, plus be installed on the site and avoid all the obstructions in the ceiling. Earls’ Kirsten Bray was amazing in this regard. She was able to provide us with the exact site measurements that would enable the installation of the lighting support structure. We were then able to draft the detailed drawings needed by the engineer for approval.

Once the approved drawings were in place, our team here at Karice crafted this amazing lighting installation. Custom aluminum channels were formed and welded. Frosted acrylic diffusers had to be cut and fit precisely to each geometric shape. The intent was for a continuous diffused illumination, so each light was created without a seam. For a perfect fit, we sanded each piece of acrylic to ensure we had perfect results. Then each of the geometric lights were sent off for powder coating.

Once the pieces were back from finishing, the detailed and labour-intensive process of installing the LEDs began. We drilled and tapped the channels so that we could install plastic retaining clips. This ensured double protection for the installation of LEDs – we didn’t want to rely solely on the adhesive.

After the twelve lights were assembled, we began the process of assembling the entire light structure. This was no easy task, considering the structure was 33-feet by 16-feet! We had to purchase many chain falls that we used in conjunction with HSS tubing to suspend the light from our upstairs assembly area.

It took many days of wiring the lighting structure so that we could provide a plug and play scenario for the installers in Boston. This involved meticulously labelling each element of the structure, with written assembly instructions. After UL testing was completed, the lights were carefully packaged for their final home in Boston, to be installed at Earls Assembly Row.

An alternate rendition of the Geometric Light can be seen at Earls Tyson’s Corner, in Virginia (just outside Washington, D.C.). The one for Tyson’s Corner was also a design collaboration between the three parties, with the drafting, engineering, and manufacturing done by Karice.

Dramatic Custom Lighting for a Florida Home

Posted by pauloneal

Dramatic custom lighting, designed by Karice, for this magnificent home in Florida.

Our client contacted us to build a custom lighting fixture for his home in Florida U.S.A.  Presented with a sketch of his vision, photos and drawings of the room, we went to work to design a light that would be perfect for his house.  The first thing we changed was the size of the light.  The room was very spacious, and would easily accommodate a larger version of the original design sketch.  Armed with elevation and plan drawings, our proposed lighting design was drafted in AutoCad to present our ideas for the project.  Inspired by our signature Diamond Luxennea Chandelier, we took design direction from the sloped angles of the light.  The lighting design is a four-tiered, square shaped chandelier.  Using Karice’s proprietary 3 inch aluminum extrusion, the LED lights are pointing down at a 45-degree angle.  Not only does this maximize illumination, visual interest is created using the angled construction.  Our client was very happy to proceed with the project once our drawings were finalized.

Four large tiered shapes were made.  The four tiers are not small at all, 5ft x 5ft, 4ft x 4ft, 3ft x 3ft and 2ft x 2ft are the sizes of the lights.  Suspending the light using aircraft cables gives the illusion that the light is floating in the air.

Have a look at the photos, I’m sure you will agree that this room is spectacularly dramatic.

Dramatic Custom Lighting created for this beautiful Florida home. Karice co-designed this light with their client to create the perfect chandelier. A huge light at 5ft x 5ft x 4ft high, dropping down in elevation 11ft high. Crafted using a proprietary aluminum extrusion, angled at 45 degrees, the light creates intense visual interest.

Our Square Diamond light is perfect in this space. Simplistic in design, yet providing functional, beautiful lighting.

Crofton House School Railings.

Crofton House School is a prestigious private girls school in Vancouver, BC.  It is located in the neighbourhood of Kerrisdale in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and is a university-preparatory school for girls that is ranked first in British Columbia, according to Fraser Institutes school rankings.

Our client contacted us to build a custom railings for Crofton House School in Vancouver.  We were honored to be able to work on this high profile project.

Railings were designed by John Verchomin of Cornerstone Architecture in Vancouver.  General contractor, Haebler, employed the services of Karice to supply and install the architectural metalwork components of the new school expansion.

Another key area of the project was the terrazo flooring that was installed in the entrances of the school.  Two 12ft diameter aluminum frameworks were manufactured by Karice to enable the flooring company to complete the task.  The end result was a beautiful flooring feature.

The main feature in this project was the striking curved dual staircase in the foyer.  The metal work marrying with the architectural millwork details casts an element of interest in the design.

Railings were made for both the interior and exterior areas of the project expansion.

Have a look at the photos, I’m sure you will agree that the railings in this school are stunning.

Brass Lights Blubird

Posted by pauloneal

The incredibly talented team at Box Interior Designs commissioned Karice to collaborate on their lighting design for the new Blubird Clothing store on Alberni Street in Vancouver. Brass lights were designed and created for this beautiful store. A beautiful bird cage concept was presented by the Box Team, and we were thrilled to be a part of that vision. Additionally, three custom brass pendants are suspended over the custom curved brass mirror frame.

The store looks amazing.  Box had created a sure winner in their vision for this retail outlet.

The main feature piece in the store is Brass Lights. The designers at box envisioned a Brass Birdcage Chandelier. The birdcage is made with genuine brass round bars, and is suspended from a single canopy that will support the weight of the chandelier. Hand blown glass was chosen to diffuse the LED bulbs that illuminate each of the nine pendants. Originally two of the pendants hung below the brass cage. This gave the artistic piece and original look and random appeal.

Enjoy your visit to the new Bluebird on Alberni Street, and feast your eyes on the sought-after international collections that curate an exclusive assortment of luxury clothing, accessories and beauty products. The new store is located at 1108 Alberni Street, in Vancouver British Columbia.

The Blubird on 1108 Alberni Street in Vancouver . Karice in collaboration with Box Interiors, designed and built a large brass bird cage chandelier, custom brass pendants and a brass screen for a mirror. Another brass feature piece was also installed into the retail outlet.

The birdcage feature is a delight to behold The lights are suspended at varying heights within the cage, and to create additional visual interest, the pendants protrude below the cage. In the final install, the protruding lights had to be shortened so as not to be at a hanging height that would interfere with the clients.
